Underwood & Underwood Publishing

Underwood & Underwood Publishing, an early producer and distributor of photographic images, was founded in Kansas in 1881 by two brothers, Elmer and Bert Underwood. During the company’s humble beginnings, the brothers served as door-to-door salesman of stereoscopic photographs. However, Underwood & Underwood Publishing eventually became the dominant sales agency of news photos until it ceased operations in the 1940s. Many of the photographs in The Brownies’ Book were provided by Underwood & Underwood.
